Innovative Solution

Alganize uses microalgae not as simple biomass, but as a biofactory for root‑exudate‑like signal molecules that activate the soil microbiome and plant defence pathways. Through optical and biotechnological stimulation, selected microalgae strains excrete cocktails of low‑molecular‑weight metabolites that mimic natural plant signals in the rhizosphere. These compounds boost microbial activity, improve nutrient availability and help plants cope better with abiotic stress such as drought and heat. Unlike conventional pesticides and fertilizers, Alganize’s biostimulants aim to stabilise yields and quality while reducing the need for synthetic inputs and protecting soil health. The company combines its products with agronomic support and microbiome analytics (DNA‑based “health scores”) to make soil regeneration and ROI visible and scalable for dealers and progressive growers.

Founding Challenges

One challenge was translating a complex microalgae and soil‑microbiome technology into simple, ROI‑driven value propositions that resonate with farmers and dealers. A second was building robust agronomic evidence across very different systems – from high‑end golf courses to vineyards, maize, fruit and nuts – while operating with typical early‑stage resource constraints. Third, navigating regulatory grey zones between fertilisers, biostimulants and plant protection, and aligning with dealer program logic, required significant learning and expert support. Finally, fundraising in a capital‑intensive, hardware‑ and biology‑heavy business model meant educating investors on soil health markets and long sales cycles, while still showing a credible path to scalable dealer‑led distribution.

How VL FAB helped you

  • Offered structured coaching on fundraising, storytelling and KPI design for a deep‑tech, biology‑driven venture.
  • Enabled visibility through events, demo days and communication channels that helped us attract talent, partners and early customers.
  • Connected us with other lab teams and technical infrastructure relevant for field trials and microbiome analytics.

Advice for other aspiring Founders

Validate your science in the field as early as possible, then translate every result into a farmer‑ and customer‑centric ROI story instead of only talking about technology. Build a tight ecosystem around you - mentors, labs, early customers and peers - and use programs like the Venture Labs not just for office space, but as active sparring partners for your strategy.
