At OmicsDiscoveries, we provide researchers, geneticists, and healthcare professionals with cutting-edge RNA-seq analysis software to accelerate research the inspection of candidate genes in rare diseases. Through our innovative bioinformatics platform RNAvision, we deliver precise, reliable, and actionable insights that facilitate genetic analysis.

Founding challenges

The first challenge was to find the right partners to set up and start the company outside of the university. In the university, we had all the necessary compute resources with sufficient security measures to process clinical data. In our company we had to set up a secure compute environment before being able to receive the first genetic dataset.

Furthermore, we didn’t have sufficient regulatory expertise to know what is expected from the regulatory authorities to develop an IVD software. It was crucial for us to quickly learn about all the requirements for a successful certification and design a roadmap to get there.

Then, applying for funding was important to support the cost-intensive development and certification activities.

How VL helped us

The Venture Lab Healthcare proved most valuable to us by providing access to an extensive network of experts spanning critical sectors such as regulatory and business. In addition, sharing an office space with other teams in similar stages like ours helped us get advice on different topics.

Further, together with the TUM Gründungsberatung the VL continuously advices us on different available funding and reviewed our applications. This led to us securing funding from the EXIST program. 

Advice for founders

Define your business plan early and discuss it with experts. Make sure there are people out there who are not just saying you have a cool idea or product, but who are actually willing to pay for it. Understand all regulatory requirements and associated costs early on, and develop a strategy to meet them.
